How have former struggling schools such as St Domains and St Thomas managed to raise themselves up from the bottom of the league tables to achieve the highest rating awarded by Offset? “Certainly not with a silver bullet,” says St Domains head teacher, Mr Logue. He believes that its a matter of raising expectations of both staff and pupils and not accepting second best. “Its not about adopting different methods,” he says. “Turning around a school is about resetting behavior. If you get a mass of students behaving well, then they become the biggest advocates of the system,” says Mr Collette, a leader of the school. When Mr Connolly took over as head teacher at the school, he walked into his first assembly(晨会)
and told the pupils that St Thomas was the worst school in the area. On that same day, he also sent 75 pupils home for bad behavior. “I believe in honesty and I had to send a clear message,” he explains. The strategy has since paid off. The schools league table results have improved greatly and many new staff have joined as a result.
Teachers need to be tough with the details too, says Ms George, deputy (副手)
head teacher at St Thomas the Apostle College. Schools are rightfully proud of their good relations with families. “Part of this has been to raise parental expectations too and let them know that destinations such as Oxbridge are within reach,” says Ms George. “All we’ve done is that we have taken a few ideas from really great schools and carried out them with strictness,” Mr Sparks, Dixons Trinity’s executive (有执行权的)
principal, insists. For five years in a row, recorded pupil satisfaction has been at an all-time high. Be the best you can be 做最好的你 旺达·史密斯一直想成为一名教师,但因为家庭责任她的梦想一再被推迟。终于,在 37岁的时候,她上了夜校。九年后,她实现了梦想,成为一名被市长嘉奖的老师。
What’s the difference between having the dream and living the dream? Its hard work and perseverance. Wanda Smith always wanted to be a school teacher, but sometimes meeting life’s demanding realities can mean a dream delayed. A mother of three, Smith, also cared for her mom. Shouldering her family responsibilities, she took jobs as bus monitor and custodian (看护人)
for Brenham Independent School District in Texas. The hours were really tough, but rather than letting her dream die, at age 37, with the support and encouragement of her husband, she added night classes to her schedule. Nine years on, she finally graduated with a bachelors degree from Sam Houston State University. She was a certified teacher at last. Smiths story came full circle when she was hired as a first-grade teacher back at Brenham Elementary School. Unfortunately, her mom and beloved sisters didn’t live to see her accomplishment, but she knows they would have been proud of her.“When I stand in front of my classroom—my classroom—I am living my dream,” Smith said.
During the pandemic, as some of her students struggled to meet the demands of distance learning, Smith stepped up to the challenge. Noting that many of the kids she teaches come from single-parent families, she began delivering packets of schoolwork to them at home. Its no wonder Smiths kids adore her. In a special surprise ceremony, they shouted their praise and held up big colorful signs declaring their devotion. The idea was supported by Brenham’s mayor, Milton Tate Jr., who—using one of Smiths own signature lines—officially declared May 4, 2021 as Be the Best You Can Be” Wanda Smith Day. The phrase was also written on a commemorative (纪念的)
schoolyard bench, and in addition, a scholarship for up-and-coming teachers at Sam Houston State University has been established in her name. Smiths life is an example as well as an inspiration. By always striving to be the best she could be, with heart and devotion she graduated from cleaning classrooms to leading classrooms—and that certainly puts her on our honor roll. [Reading][Check] Ⅰ. Have you ever read the book The Rent Collector? This book is based on a true story of a family in Cambodia who lives in a garbage dump(垃圾厂)
They look for things of value that they can sell and earn a living in the trash. They have a son who is ill and the mother is trying all she knows to try and heal him. It is only when she begins to learn to read that she is able to change her situation and make their lives better. This is a powerful story and one that is repeated all around the world. One-third of children around the world do not complete six years of schooling—the basic need for education. Studies show that even one year of education increases a persons earnings worldwide by 10%. The more you know, the more you are able to better your life. Education was always of utmost importance in my home growing up. My parents always told us how our education would better our lives. I guess I got that, but not really. As I have grown up and seen the benefit of a well-educated mind, I am only just beginning to understand what they really meant. I graduated from high school an Ad from college with honors. The knowledge and skills gained from these degrees have given me confidence, abilities and opportunities that I would not have received otherwise. I feel that the poverty around the world is directly related to education. The more educated a person is, the more likely that person will be to rise out of poverty and change their situation. Education does change lives.
After the typhoon in the Philippines, my father spent a lot of time over there with a non-profit organization to help build things back up. One of the goals was to help people restore their lives with work, homes and education. These men did not have the knowledge or the tools needed to fill the necessary jobs. So, a training program was started to help them. Once they had skills, they were able to support their families and escape their poverty-stricken lives. It was education and job-training that helped them get out of trouble. [Reading][Check] Ⅰ. Complete the following mind map with only one word for each blank. Ⅱ.
